Shoot For The Moon...But If You Miss...

3-9-2009
1. As we begin to really read through Junior/Arnold's life, we begin to become acquainted with all the people and relationships that surround him.

There are numerous people in Junior's life that fail to reach their full potential because they do not believe in themselves.

I'll give you an example of one of the characters, but pick out 1 other character who falls short of his/her goals or dreams. When you're done working through the text, answer this:

-Has there ever been a time in YOUR life when you "haven't reached your full potential"? Was there something more you could've done? If you could go back and do it over...would you?
Please respond in AT LEAST 4-5 sentences.

My example:
Junior's mother is one character that does not reach her full potential. We, as readers, know this because Junior states that, if given the chance, he feels that she would go back to college and fulfill her education. She "still reads books like crazy...and...remembers everything she reads...she can recite whole pages by memory...can read the newspaper in fifteen minutes and tell...baseball scores, the location of every war, the latest guy to win the Lottery" (11-13).

  1. i think that Junior's dad fails to reach his full potential. His dad likes to sing when he's drunk and plays the piano and guitar. Mostly i think his father isn't living up to his potential because he shows that he really cares about his dream by saving his saxophone from high school and keeps it in good shape. He acts like he would joina a band at any time if he could.

  2. So far in the book I think that both Juniors parents do not meet their full potential. Juniors dad did not pursue his dream of becoming a musician when we can obviously tell he loves it. Juniors mom had natural talent for memorizing literature and other things that are special. Not meeting potential in my life I can relate to sports. In track, it always feels like you could have pushed yourself a little harder and ran that little bit faster. In basketball, after the game you are always thinking why couldn't I have finished that shot? Or made that free throw? It's hard to judge whether I would want to play a game over again because I almost always give 100%.

  3. I think that juniors dad does not reach to his full potential. He never reaches it because like he never goes out and try to get a job and try to support his family better. He has a dream but does not pursue to follow his dream he always had to. I think that if Juniors dad reached to his full potential then he would go out form a band and fiollow his dream.

  4. I think a lot of the people that Junior knows didn't reach their full potential. So Junior doesn't know how to reach to his full potential. I didn't reach to my full potential when I did gymnastics. The coaches at the place said I was a natural at it, but because I didn't like getting picked up late I quite. I wish I would have stuck with it.

  6. I think that his parents have not reached their goals in this book because they don't try to get out of thier rez and try to become someone that they've wanted to be. I think that this pressures Junior to stay in the rez and follow after his parents. In my life I think that I put myself down when I can't achieve even when I haven't really worked for it.

  7. I think that Junior's Father has not reached his full potential; therefore Junior doesn't know what to do to reach his full potential. Junior recalls when his father gets drunk, he sings, plays the guitar, and the piano. Also he keeps his high school saxophone in perfect shape; almost like he is about to join a band any minute.

  8. when i was a freshman and i was in the RISE program, i was excelling in all my classes except world history and it was only because i didnt no how to study for it. so i kept getting c's and d's and i was having such a hard time...i figured out at the END of the year that i just had to read over the chapter instead of studying the studyguide. i started getting A's at the end of the year when it didnt matter anymore. i would have gone back and changed everything if i could.

  9. There have been times when i feel that im not reaching my full potential. Like last year i was not doing soo good in my english class. i was getting sooo mad because i have never gotten bad grades in school or ever struggled with english because its one of my favorite subjects. I ended up having to be in this place called guided study hall where i could get help with my grades in the class because at this point i was failing. shortly i found out that i wasnt the only person in that class that was failing. i dont consider my self super smart but like average. well the SMART kids were getting c's and the average kids were anywhere from a d to and f. when i found out that other people were struggling i stop putting soo much blam on myslef and just kept trying to do the best i could.
