The Person I Go To For Advice [My Mother]

My mom is definatly my "go to" person. I know when i have a problem i can talk to her about it and she will help me anyway she can. She would never judge me on decisions i make, but will tell me what to do next time. Yes, i dont always agree with what she has to say but one thing i know about my mom is that he isnt going to tell me what i wanna hear. She is gonna tell me the truth. Therefore i always take her adive to heart. She is really an amazing mom!

Jeff and I are not very close to one another. However, he has still made a huge impact on my life. I've always competed with him in all of the sports we have done over the years. Because of this I have always been able to push myself to be the best that I can be. Without Jeff, I have no doubt that I would have accomplished no where near the amount that I have now.

Valentine Heart- My Favorite Things

In "Valentine Heart", Junior creates "happy lists" in which he names the things that make him happy.

Please make THREE lists of 9 things that make you happy (food, activites, muscians, etc.).

JAKE NEDZA

The person that influences me the most is my best friends geoff. We are in a band together and i have a great time with him because hes alot of fun. When I need advice on girls, partying, or just how to be good looking i go to him. Me and him are like brittney and justin timberlake..unstoppable. If i need any help he theres for me. Me and him our like family, hes a bro. Without Geoff those stupid, dumb jokes wouldnt feel the same. He really is a super duper friend. LOL

JAKE NEDZA

Kelsey!!

Me + Kelsey have been Best Friends since I can remember! and we used to fight a lot... about really dumb reasons that neither of us remember anymore XD Sooo how bad could they have been? and I know I'm a very egotistical person(but try not to show it) ^.- and I don't respect a lot of people...(but also never let THEM know it) hah... but she doesn't care +I can tell her about all the things anyone else would be all offended by (I wont list) and... yea!! so...thank you Kelsey!... ^_^' ?
FIN

My sister Jamie is the first person I go to for advice. I can go to her to talk about just about anything and she will help me out. Whether it's helping me with homework or talking about how my day was. She knows everything because whatever i did she probably did two years earlier when she was my age. She almost always goes to my football and basketball games and supports me. When we were young we named ourselves team "J". We almost always get along and never really fight because we can get along and talk easily.

My Brother Nolan

My Brother Nolan is definatly the person I go to for advise because hes really easy to talk to and has strong opinions about everything and he can give you straight answers to any question. He is really smart and is expecially good at arguing and debates. He can change your opinion about anything and I always trust everything he says. He's been through everything I have and always has good advise and real things to say. He knows what he believes and doesn't censor himself for any reason. Recently, hes given me advise about driving because I'm getting ready to take the test for my license.

My Mom Gives Me Advice

I would have to say my mom gives me the most advice, that i can actually use. My dad gives me advise but it is usually in a lecture format, so that makes me never want to listen. Anyways me and my mom have a lot in common, after all she is my mom, including reading books and traveling. Whenever I am in a situation i know i can turn to her for advice, even though usually I just trust my own decision making abilities. It always seems that she can keep me going when I feel like giving up. We have our ups and downs, but she is family and i KNOW i can always count on her for advice, even when the times get tough.

The person that influences me the most would definitely be my older brother, Tommy. I go to him for advice a lot because he's pretty much been in all of the same situations I have and has positive advice to give me. I go to him because he doesn't judge me in any way and that's what I love about him. I usually hang out with him and his friends on Saturdays, and I think that has made us closer as brother and sister. I think it's made us closer because if he acts weird or different around his friends than I know that's something he's doesn't like or is insecure about and I'll ask him about it later and there is usually a story behind it. The best advice he has ever given me would be that those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. I don't know what I would do without him.

My Influence

My best friend Sarah is the one I go to for advice and is my biggest influence. We both have had same type of events that have happened in our life. So if I need advice or something she's usually the first person that I go to, and vice verse. But we usually give it in the truthful way, like we never just give each other just what we want to hear, we give each other the truth and maybe a cherry on top. We both also are into music. We both play music, so whenever we finish a piece of music or something, we look it over and basically edit and give pointers. She is also my biggest influence. she is usually 99.9% happy and cheerful. And that's like all the time, me not so much. I'm always happy when I don't think. But when I do think, I'm usually depressed. Because when I do think, my brain acts like a computer and thinks everything out. Tells me things that are reasonable and logical. And trust me everything that is thought when I really just let my brain go wild and just think, is reasonable and logical. And most of it is probably true or will happen. The truth hurts, and that's how I get it out by writing music, and she kind of helps me cope with it. She helps me get through life.... haha she's kinda like my personal psychiatrist.
Throughout my life my older brother eric has probly been the most helpful to me. He always has great advice for me when im confused about something and how i should approuch my problem or he helps me when i dont understand my hw. He also plays soccer and wrestles so he is always helping me get better and coaching me when he can. While he can be preatty annoying sometimes and although we have gotten in many fights id still have to say he is an awsome older brother and i cant wait till he comes back from colledge!

My best friends =)

All of my friends influence me the most. These are 2 of my best friends, Tina and Nikki. They know literally everything about me. IThey help me with everything and I trust them with anything. We're some of the weirdest people you will ever meet and we have a lot of fun. I have no idea what I would do without them, they're like my sisters. <3

Robert Wasp BFF

Robert is my best friend. The guy I can tell everything to. His opinion means a lot to me because I trust that he wants whats best for me no mater what the situation is. Robert is very funny, loyal and just a best friend that I am lucky to have. Robert has given me advice about a lot of things some which I would rather not post but it was good advice and it helped me a lot. He has helped me with problems from school, home, or if I need him to cool down my soup with his soup-coolers he has always been there. He is someone I can trust with my life.

She's always here for me && i'm always here for her. that's just the way we roll (:

My friends influence me the most. Their opnions are the only ones that really matter to me. I go to my bestfriend, emily, for advice. She always trys to help me if I go to her for help. _________ Gives Me Advice

In "Grandmother Gives Me Advice", we learn about the strong influences in Junior's life.

"Grandma," I said. "I punched this big guy in the face and he just walked away. And now I'm afraid he's going to kill me."
"Why did you punch him?" she asked.
"He was bullying me."
"You should have just walked away."
"He called me 'chief'.' And 'squaw boy.'"
"Then you should have kicked him in the balls."

On page 69, Junior includes a picture of his grandmother with different captions.
Who influences you? Who do you go to for advice? Please describe this person, your relation to them, etc. and talk about a time you went to them for advice. 5-6 sentences please!

Include a picture-- you can either use a "real" photo, or you can draw one through paint. Once you have a picture of who influences you, add captions or arrows about that person.

Fighting Monsters and Fitting In

In "How to Fight Monsters", Junior talks about the difference in "fisticuff" (fighting) rules the Indians have versus the fighting rules the boys at Reardon display. The dialogue goes:

"You meet me after school right here," I said.
"Why?" he asked.
I couldn't believe he was so stupid.
"Because we're going to finish this fight."
"You're crazy," Roger said.
He go to his feet and walked away. His gang stared at me like I was a
serial killer, and they followed their leader.
I was absolutely confused.
I had followed the rules of fighting. I had behaved exactly the way I was
supposed to behave. But these white boys had ignored the rules. In fact, they
followed a whole other set of mysterious rules where people apparently DID NOT
GET INTO FISTFIGHTS.
"Wait," I called after Roger.
"What do you want?" Roger asked.
"What are the rules?"
"What rules?"
I didn't know what to say, so I just stood there red and mute like a stop
sign. Roger and his friends disappeared.
I felt like somebody had moved me into a rocket ship and blasted me to a
new planet. I was a freaky alien and there was absolutely no way to get
home.

Has this ever happened to you? Describe a situation in which you thought you were following the "rules" or norms, but then found out that you actually weren't? How did this make you feel? Did you feel like an alien, like Junior did? Or did you teach the people around you a new perspective?
-Please respond in AT LEAST 4-5 sentences.

Evan's HW...

For this I chose Junior. I chose Junior because it seems that this kid has the potential to be some one in the world. He just doesn’t have the self-esteem to go and make the magic work, so to speak. It just keeps being crushed by others that don’t really believe in him. And Junior’s situation is kind of like mine. Haha I have low-self esteem. It kind of shows, I have no job. But something that happened to me, happened to me socially. When you move all the time you kind of understand. You don’t really make friends and friendships because you don’t want a sad or depressing feeling of never seeing someone which you love ever again. So I never made any friends in school because I learned the hard way. I moved seven times lost eight of my closest friends in grade and preschool. And from that, I never really made friends till it was too late, like end of 8th grade. And I wish I could go back in time and change when I could trust the fact that we weren’t moving anymore and start making friends. And also maybe not be able loose those friends some how.

Alexa's Homework.

The one character that I think fell short of their dreams is Junior's dad. I picked him because he really didn't become what he wanted to be and he didn't reach to his full potential. Junior said, if his dad could've, he would have been a musician and play the sax. He also talked about how his dad is very musically talented and how he is a good singer. Junior thinks his dad is great at what he does/did and should even be heard on the radio. His dad didn't try and pursue his dream because no one really believed in him or tried to encourage him to become a musician or saw his potential in becoming one. You can tell his dad still cares about music by how he treats his old high school sax. If only one person had just told him that he could do it, who knows what could have happened. I feel that I also have fell short on my grades. I don't get bad grades, but I feel like I should have started to try harder a little sooner. I never really realized how important they can be until I had already made some mistakes. But, I can't go back in time, so I have to try and make up for other things now.

Georgia's homework (:

junior, and his mom&&dad didnt reach they're full potiental. i think thats because they didn't have faith in themselves, so they didnt think they could do it. For me, there are deffinitly times when i didnt do as well as i know i could have. such as on tests. sometimes i'll get lazy and iknow that if i actually had put some effort into studying for those tests, then i could have done better.

Katys hw =)

I don't think that juniors dad has lived up to his full potential. He used to love playing the sax and he wanted to be a musician, but since no one encouraged him to follow his dreams, he didn't follow them. He now lives at the reservation and drinks a lot. When he drinks he thinks about his dreams of being a musicion and i think it makes him sad. An example of a time i didnt live up to my potential is probably my grades. I think that i could have done a lot better with my grades so far and it would get me farther later in life.

Rachel's homework

I think that if I had to pick one person it would be Junior's mom. I think that his dad had his musical talent, and failed to pursue it, but his mom had many more different oppurtunities. She was able to read, and memorize everything that she had read. She could have become a teacher, a writer, journalist, and many other things with the talents she had. I think that if she had really worked hard at going to college she could have achieved a lot. I think its partly her fault because she could have tried for scholarships even though they are difficult to get, but also its hard to be poor and even harder to tell your parents you want them to pay for college, when they can't afford it. I think that Junior suffers from this because if his mom's intelligence didn't motivate her to go forward in life, how is Junior supposed to believe that he and his cartoons are important? If no one is motivating him, then he will just continue with the choices that most people from the reservation make. There are a lot of times that I haven't shown my full potentential, including my grades. My grades should have been a lot better this last semester and I really need to try harder. I think I would do it over if I could, but I think I have learned from this and it will make me work harder and be less lazy.

Tiffany's Homework

I think one of the people in this story that have not reached their full potential is Junior's dad. He said that if he had the opportunity his dad would have been a musician. Junior says that he sounds like a pro and should be on the radio. If Junior thinks that his dad is a good singer then other people would too. "And he has this old saxophone from high school that he keeps all clean and shiny, like he's going to join a band at any moment" (pg 13). This shows that he really cares about his dreams and wanted to be a country or blues singer but just didn't live up to his full potential or reach for his dreams. I think a time in my life where I haven't worked up to my full potential is in school. I could probably strive for betters grades and try harder in different areas of school.

Hey Gang!

Be sure to post your homework with the comment link on the bottom of the original post by Ms. Cooper. Take care!

Jayona's HW

I think that Rowdy has not reached his full potential. His dad is an alcoholic and is abusive. That is setting a bad example for Rowdy. It seems that Rowdy is already following in his dad's footsteps because when he went to the powwow with Jr. he wanted to buy some whiskey. So I am guessing he probably gotten drunk numerous times. Jr. also said that Rowdy fights anybody and everybody girls, boys, men, and women. Father like son.Rowdy is only 14 years old so maybe he can wise up and reach his full potential. Maybe there is still hope, but it is just gonna be tougher because he is surrounded by a lot of negativity. As for me reaching my full potential I know I haven't because who doesn't think oh well I wish I did this, or man I shoulda, woulda, coulda did this. Plus I have a lot of time to get there.

Rayna - HOMEWORK

I chose juniors dad because he doesn't reach his full potential in life. Since no one believed in him and saw his potential he never reached his dreams of being a sax player/musician. Junior says that when his father gets drunk he sings old country songs and the blues too. He even pointed out that he actually sounds good when he sings. So imagine what other people could have thought of him too, if he got the opportunity. He takes pride in his sax from high school keeping it clean a new looking. Now hes will never achieve his dreams because its at the point where its almost to late. There has been times in my life where I haven't reached my full potential. For example my grades. If I ever got straight A's I would be able to get my bellybutton pierced. Yet over and over again I fall short of all A's. There's no need for me to go back and do it over because I still have time to improve.

Demy's HW <3

Well i dont think the dad has lived up to his full potential. He had dreams of becoming a musician but now hes just kind of stuck at the rez. Also hes a drunk and i think when hes drunk thats the only time he remembers his dreams about being a singer and musician, which is kind of sad. I cant really remember a time when i didnt live to my full potential. The only thing i can think of is my grades. I wish i could go back and put in more time and effort in the things i did.

Brandon's HW

Ok from what we have read so far i think that Rowdy hasnt reached his full potential. This is because although hes very open about himself with jr, he doesnt really open up much to everyone else. It just seems as if he tries to bully everyone else instead of trying to get to know more people.
Now from a personal experience yes there has been many times that i didnt reach my full potential. This usually happens during sports. For example last year my team and I went down to California for a soccer tournament. Now we all got to stay in hotels and such, so most of us made poor choices and stayed up really late and messed around. Then by the next morning some of my other teammates and I were really tired for are next game so we really didnt play as well as could have causing us to not do so well in the tounrament. If i would be able to go back and changed what happened I think I would have because although we had fun staying up I think it would have been more fun to win the tounament.

(Laura's) ~Homework~

ok, I choose Jr. as the character I type about as to not being able to reach his goals. I think the reason fer this is because he's grown up being doubted and so now he doubts himself and has seemed to give up... But, not entierly... because he still draws his cartoons and as he said they're like his "little lifeboats."

Shoot For The Moon...But If You Miss...

3-9-2009
1. As we begin to really read through Junior/Arnold's life, we begin to become acquainted with all the people and relationships that surround him.

There are numerous people in Junior's life that fail to reach their full potential because they do not believe in themselves.

I'll give you an example of one of the characters, but pick out 1 other character who falls short of his/her goals or dreams. When you're done working through the text, answer this:

-Has there ever been a time in YOUR life when you "haven't reached your full potential"? Was there something more you could've done? If you could go back and do it over...would you?
Please respond in AT LEAST 4-5 sentences.

My example:
Junior's mother is one character that does not reach her full potential. We, as readers, know this because Junior states that, if given the chance, he feels that she would go back to college and fulfill her education. She "still reads books like crazy...and...remembers everything she reads...she can recite whole pages by memory...can read the newspaper in fifteen minutes and tell...baseball scores, the location of every war, the latest guy to win the Lottery" (11-13).
